What can we do to fight corruption?
Episode show notes, selected highlights, and related content:
How other countries fought corruption:
Transparency & Open Data
Estonia – Built a fully digital government. Almost all services (taxes, healthcare, voting, permits) are online and traceable, making it hard for officials to manipulate records.
Strong Independent Agencies
Hong Kong – Created the Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) in the 1970s. It aggressively investigated both small and large cases, restoring public trust.
Reducing Red Tape
Singapore – Simplified government processes (permits, licenses, etc.), cutting opportunities for bribery. They also pay public officials competitive salaries to reduce temptation.
Whistleblower Protection & Citizen Reporting
South Korea – Has strong whistleblower laws, allowing citizens and insiders to safely report corruption without retaliation.
Strong Punishments
China – Uses very strict punishments, including lifetime bans and even imprisonment for corrupt officials. (Though controversial, it has created fear among public servants.)
Political Will at the Top
Rwanda – After the 1994 genocide, the government prioritized anti-corruption as part of rebuilding. Top officials publicly disclose their wealth and assets.
Independent Media & Freedom of Information
Scandinavian countries (Denmark, Sweden, Finland) – High press freedom and easy access to government documents discourage shady deals. Citizens can literally request to see public officials’ expenses.
Civic Tech & Mobile Reporting
India – Launched mobile apps like “I Paid a Bribe” where citizens anonymously report bribes they were asked to pay, creating public pressure.
Education & Culture Shift
Georgia – After the Rose Revolution (2003), the government reformed the police force and made anti-corruption education part of civic culture.
International Standards & Cooperation
European Union countries – Follow strict procurement and audit standards, with checks from both local and EU watchdogs to limit misuse of funds.
