Midyear thoughts, lessons, and year-end aspirations

TIME PERCEPTION
Having a daily routine can make time feel like it’s passing more quickly in the moment, but it can also make time seem to pass more slowly when looking back. This is because routines, while helpful for productivity and structure, can lead to a sense of sameness, causing the brain to lump together similar days, making them blur when recalled. Conversely, new and novel experiences tend to slow down our perception of time in the moment and make them more memorable when looking back.

THE UNFAIR ADVANTAGE

BOOK: Ash Ali, Hasan Kubba (2022). The Unfair Advantage: How You Already Have What It Takes to Succeed. St. Martin’s Press

CONCEPT: Success = Fair Play x Unfair Advantage

Fair play refers to the stuff that all of us are capable of doing such as working hard, being determined, having perseverance, practicing grit, etc. The unfair advantage, on the other hand, is what gives a person the competitive edge to succeed. It’s what makes them unique and the reason why they can pull ahead of others, even though others are as hardworking or as determined as them.

The MILES Framework of Unfair Advantages:

  • Money
  • Intelligence or Insight
  • Luck or Location
  • Education or Expertise
  • Status
