How do you make friends as an adult?

Episode show notes, selected highlights, and related content:

It is generally considered harder to make friends as an adult compared to when you are younger, mainly because adults tend to have more established lives with work, family commitments, and less structured social environments that naturally facilitate new friendships.

Key reasons why making friends as an adult can be challenging:

  • Busy schedules: Adults often have busy work schedules and family obligations, making it difficult to dedicate time to building new friendships.
  • Established social circles: Most people have a well-established group of friends by adulthood, making it harder to integrate into new social circles.
  • Less structured social environments: Unlike school or college, where social interactions are built-in, adults need to actively seek out opportunities to meet new people.
  • Increased selectivity: As people mature, they may become more selective about who they befriend, looking for deeper connections and shared values.

How do you make friends as an adult?

To make friends as an adult, focus on joining groups or activities related to your interests, like book clubs or volunteer work, be open to new experiences, actively engage in conversations, and don’t be afraid to be vulnerable by sharing about yourself with potential friends; essentially, leverage your passions and actively seek out opportunities to connect with others who share similar interests.
