Frasier

Frasier is an American sitcom that aired from 1993 to 2004. It is a spin-off of Cheers and follows Dr. Frasier Crane (played by Kelsey Grammer), a snobby but lovable psychiatrist who moves back to his hometown of Seattle after his divorce. He becomes a radio show host, offering advice to callers while navigating his own complicated personal and professional life.

The show revolves around Frasier’s relationships with his gruff but good-hearted father, Martin (John Mahoney), his quirky brother, Niles (David Hyde Pierce), live-in caregiver Daphne (Jane Leeves), and sharp-witted producer Roz (Peri Gilpin). Frasier is known for its witty dialogue, highbrow humor, and mix of sophisticated comedy with slapstick. It won numerous awards and is considered one of the greatest sitcoms of all time.

Dry Humor

Dry humor, also known as deadpan humor, is a style of comedy where jokes are delivered with little to no change in emotion, tone, or facial expression. It often relies on irony, subtlety, and understatement, making it different from more exaggerated or obvious comedic styles.

This kind of humor works because the contrast between the serious delivery and the absurdity of the statement creates a comedic effect. It often requires sharp timing, clever wordplay, and an ability to keep a straight face. It’s the kind of humor that doesn’t ask for a laugh but gets one anyway. British comedy is well-known for its dry humor, as are comedians like Steven Wright, Bob Newhart, and Ricky Gervais.

A good example of dry humor: “I told my wife she should embrace her mistakes. She gave me a hug.”
